While I agree that Youtube's copyright policies are a bit overzealous, this is nothing nefarious. What they are saying with their contractual obligations amounts to a network telling a late night talk show host that he can't say "I like Pepsi!", because they have an advertising contract with Coca Cola. That's it. It sucks, it's anti-creative, and some really good Pepsi jokes will get lost in the mess. But it's not nefarious.

I have 2 videos over 6 million views and they were live on YouTube until I noticed UMG blocked me from having them available on mobile phones. So I filled out a dispute and while that was going on it became available on phones which gave the videos more views. Then they hit me with a copyright strike and both the videos were taken down. I filled out a counter notification and in about 10 says YouTube replied saying they can't honor the process. So I have just contacted UMG myself explaining why they should put my videos back up. Is there any way that the videos will go back up? I've filled out another counter notification and I don't know if the same thing will happen. Can anyone see my videos being back online after I've emailed youtube@umusic.com?

Thanks for the post. UMG & YT do not follow the legally required procedure when a "content producer" files counter notice. Counter notice works against "most" of the companies that file false copyright claims, but not UMG. There is no significant time or cost to file counter notice, it's just pointless with UMG. There are apparently a few court cases already done or in the works vs. UMG. :)

You need to file counter notices - despite all time and costs. Outside counsel for YT and UMG are indiscriminatel y greasing the handsome retainers they enjoy are "our" expense, = innovation.

YT continues to drive me crazy, the upload that included the (false) copyright claim song has now automatically been cleared of that charge. The copyright "tab" on the left dissappeared. It did not automatically monetize, but I was able to turn monetize on. So now I have that up plus the one that I used "delete a song" on. Go figure. Crazy YT people can't make up their friggin minds. :)

It worked but obviuosly this is not a fix for other fair use scenarios where the videographer wants the audio for the "story". With incidental background music this may work for you. If you are talking over the music, you could annotate what you were saying, there is also some closed caption option, which I know nothing about. Maybe play with that. I'll visit once in a while, remember make backups to every video & thanks Patrick! :)

I left up the claim-counter claim that expired as a test to see if UMG gets mad about missing the date. The one I got a strike for, I put back up & yt/google immediately hit me with a warning about one (UMG) song, same one. This interested me as I conclude that yt/google is actually contracted and doing the work for UMG (and of course ignoring Fair Use law with impunity). I tried the Remove a song - beta program which blanks out the audio & leaves dead air on your/my vid. There is an option to stuff some other song in the dead air, but I preferred leaving it blank. I will annotate what is going to happen as a warning, the diy is still useful IMO. Let's see if that clears the warning & re monetizes the video. All an experiment to "probe" their defenses and see what workarounds can be applied, where you have a completed video with fair use backgroung audio. Will post back. Happy New Year all!

The claim/counter claim "timed out" and basically "evaporated" off the copyright section of my channel, so I re-monitized it & will see if the robot picks it out again. I may just take it down as it's an insignificant part of the channel & I have no clue what the UMG/Google/YT "reaction" will be. In other words "pick your battle" tactic. With my luck, some nameless worker could throw a triple strike on my channel & delete it. They seem to make up rules as they go along. Guess I'll pull it. :)
